Women PeaceMakers Program
Made possible by a grant from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation
Narratives of Women PeaceMakers
Many women around the world are peace-builders. Each has a story that can inspire us and teach us about acting on our values, our integrity, and our human compassion, as well as illustrate some of the paths taken to end, or overcome, or go beyond conflict’s wounds. These are the stories of women who have come to the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice to rest and reflect on their journeys thus far.
Each peacemaker who has joined us in San Diego has an on-going story. These narratives capture only the reflections made during a peacemaker’s stay at the IPJ. Each peacemaker’s story has been recorded and written in collaboration with a devoted writer who, for two months, explored daily the journey of a single peacemaker in residence at the IPJ. These are “their” stories.
Women who mobilize to deter the escalation of conflict, prevent a resurgence of violence, or address the human needs of those caught in wars that they did not start nor understand, these women can be government representatives, leaders of non-governmental organizations, activists, teachers, religious persons, and mothers. Undeterred by intimidation and repression, women organize and strategize about how to promote peace and true, inclusive democracy that will come from within human communities. The women you will meet here in coming months and years are on the frontlines of negotiation and educating for peace, creating human security networks, and working on long-term justice and good governance. At times their work encounters huge new barriers, but these women remain committed to finding new ways to move forward to end armed conflict, build new infrastructures for justice and security of all, and create the foundations for sustainable peace.
More stories of IPJ peacemakers will be appearing here soon. In the future all stories and analysis of common threads of gender sensitive and inclusive peacemaking will be available in book form.
This project would not be possible with out the support and encouragement of the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. “Leading the Way to Peace,” an hour-long documentary on the 2004 women peacemakers is available through Sun and Moon Vision Production at http://www.sunandmoonvision.org.
