INTERNSHIPS – FALL SEMESTER AND

YEAR-LONG INTERNSHIP

What is the IPJ Internship Program?

Interns will have the opportunity to learn how a nongovernmental educational institute works by working on IPJ projects alongside scholars and practitioners in the fields of human rights and conflict resolution.

 

Dates

The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice at the University of San Diego is now recruiting for four internship positions.

  • Three interns will be selected to serve during the fall semester. The dates of the fall semester are Thursday, September 4 – Friday, December 12.

  • A fourth intern will be selected to serve throughout the academic year, September 4 – May 15 (this includes a three-week hiatus, December 13 – January 4).


Qualifications for the two internship programs differ, as described below. The deadline for application for both internships is July 11.

Fall Semester Internship – 3 positions


Intern Responsibilities:

Assist with IPJ projects and events, including research assistance, support to events, and some administrative support.

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment, with senior status, in an undergraduate program, majoring in a field related to peace studies, human rights, or international relations.
  • GPA of 3.3 or higher.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Minimum of 15, and preferably up to 20, hours per week.


2008 – 2009 Internship – 1 position (graduate intern)

Intern Responsibilities:

Assist with the development of IPJ projects and events; in particular, assist with editing the published proceedings of the annual international conference of the Women PeaceMakers Program. The graduate intern will also provide research assistance, support to events, and mentoring to three incoming interns during the spring semester.

Qualifications:

  • A recent B.A. (or M.A.) degree in a field related to peace studies, human rights, or international relations; or enrollment in an M.A. program in one of the above fields or a related field.
  • GPA of 3.3 or higher.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Minimum of 15, and preferably up to 20, hours per week.


Application Requirements:

The elements of the application package are the same for both internships, although it is understood that applicants for the year-long internship will demonstrate a somewhat more advanced level of understanding of the field. Items 1 – 4 on the list below may be emailed if the applicant so desires; items 5 and 6 should be sent in hard-copy.

  • Resume – 2 page maximum
  • Essay – 500 word maximum, stating your interest in the work of the IPJ, your objectives for and expectations of an IPJ internship (please specify for which one you are applying), and how these apply to your career goals.
  • Writing sample – 10 page maximum
  • Two to three letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a professor.
  • Original transcripts – transcripts from each college or university attended.
