Defend Human Rights - Nepal
Protesting the Interference over the NGOsPress Statement
June 30, 2005Kathmandu translated from Nepali statement We, the Coalition of National Human Rights Defenders express our concern regarding the interference of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working for the advancement and development of society in conflict-affected and rural areas of the country during the period of conflict. We strongly condemn the illegal demand of the military and District Monitoring Committee about the financial record and program details of NGOs in Banke and Jumla Districts. The interference of the military and District Monitoring Committee demonstrates undemocratic and illegal practice of the regime, while the NGOs are carrying out legitimate activities after registering at the District Administration Office and Social Welfare Council. This act proves the complete absence of rule of law in the country and the state's systematic attempt to dismantle democratic institutions. We are convinced that the state aims to limit the public participation by ruling arbitrarily in the country based on prejudices against the NGOs. This act creates obstacles to enjoy right to development of the citizen and violates the basic principles of democracy, freedom, and human rights. On behalf of the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders [Formerly known as the group of 25 human rights organizations] Subodh Raj Pyakurel |
