[On February 27, 2002], the Board of Directors of the
Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists [moved] the minute hand of the ‘Doomsday Clock,’ the symbol of nuclear danger, from nine to seven minutes to midnight, the same setting at which the clock debuted 55 years ago. Since the end of the Cold War in
1991,this is the third time the hand has moved forward.”
(From the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists)
In his acceptance speech for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned of “a race against time” to keep nuclear and radiological material out of the hands of extremist groups. In his recent book for the Headline Series of the Foreign Policy Association, “Seven Minutes to Midnight: Nuclear Weapons after 9/11,” Ronald J. Bee, Director of the Charles A. Hostler Institute on World Affairs at San Diego State University, analyzes the developments that have brought the world to that point and outlines prescriptions to push the minute hand back.
