"Nuclear Power Is Not the Answer "
7:00pm
IPJ Theater
Co-Sponsored by the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility
Political leaders, increasingly acknowledging the dilemma of oil dependency, are looking for alternative sources of energy, including nuclear. Dr. Helen Caldicott’s forthcoming book,
Nuclear Power Is Not the Answer, maintains that contrary to propaganda promoting nuclear power as a “clean and green” alternative energy source, nuclear power in fact does contribute to global warming; its real costs are prohibitive (and taxpayers pick up most of them); there is not enough uranium in the world to sustain long-term nuclear power; and the potential for a catastrophic accident or terrorist attack far outweighs any benefits.
The co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility returns to the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice after her original talk here in May 2003. After nearly four decades of antinuclear activism, Dr. Caldicott turns her attention “from nuclear bombs to nuclear lightbulbs,” arguing that the world cannot withstand either.
Copies of Nuclear Power Is Not the Answer, and other books by Helen Caldicott, will be available for purchase and signing. A reception will follow the talk.
