IPJ Speaker Series presents

Elections in Iraq:
Ready or Not

7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
IPJ Theatre

Panel discussion featured Ambassador Joseph Ghougassian, Ms. May George, Mr. Ali Mohammed Al-Adhary, Mr. Hamdy Singary, and Mr. Steven Moore.

The news media daily bring us reports of the evolving situation in Iraq, half a year after the installation of the interim Iraqi government that replaced the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority.  Meantime January 30th, the scheduled date for national elections, draws ever nearer.  Some groups within Iraq have called for a postponement, arguing that security conditions do not allow for a meaningful electoral process.  Others, both inside and outside Iraq, maintain that elections are the only way to move forward toward a permanent national government and the development of democracy in post-war Iraq.

A diverse panel will consider the questions on the eve of the scheduled election date.  Amb. Joseph Ghougassian (M.A. '77, J.D. '80), is a consultant to Iraq's Higher Education Ministry.  Ms. May George, Mr. Ali Mohammed Al-Adhary, Mr. Hamdy Singary are Fulbright scholars from diverse faith traditions and geographical regions within Iraq.
