May 29-31, 2002
The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice and
the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, DC present:
"Blurring the lines":
Third party response to conflict
To explore issues related to peace and conflict resolution while at the same time helping to develop and stimulate more effective teaching in these areas, the United States Institute of Peace has developed a faculty workshop program. The U.S. Institute of Peace works with post-secondary academic institutions to develop workshops and seminars that focus on specific issues related to conflict and peace. These faculty workshops are held around the United States in partnership with four-year colleges and universities and, occasionally, with community colleges. The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ) and the U.S. Institute of Peace encourage participation by faculty from across the San Diego area as well as from a variety of disciplines.
The workshop will combine the following formats and approaches:
- A blend of content analysis with a focus on teaching methodology and on ways to engage students with the topics of the workshop;
- Presentations by experts mixed with interactive, facilitated dialogue;
- Bridging the gap between theory and practice (most presentations and panels combine practitioners and scholars);
- The use of case studies to draw lessons that can be used for comparison and as teaching tools in the classroom; and,
- A premise that analyzing topics such as international security, human rights, the global environment, or economic development contributes to a better understanding of international peace and conflict.
The workshop will feature conflict resolution practitioners and scholars, to be announced. Participation is limited to the first 30 registrants. There is no charge for the workshop; dinner on May 29th and lunches on May 30 & 31 will be provided at no charge. Additional information will be forthcoming.
