Dr. John G. Stoessinger

Distinguished visiting professor of Global Diplomacy
at the University of San Diego

Dr. John Stoessinger, whose life was saved twice by Japanese diplomats in 1941 as his family tried to escape the holocaust, is now a renowned scholar of international diplomacy. Dr. Stoessinger will share his personal story, tell lasting lessons learned about humanity's capacity to overcome those dark times and express his hope for peace and friendship for the 21st century in U.S.-Japan relations and beyond.

Since receiving his Ph.D. at Harvard, Dr. Stoessinger has taught at Harvard, MIT, Columbia, Princeton, the City University of New York, and Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. In 1969, he led the International Seminar on International Relations at Harvard University, and in 1970 he received an honorary doctor of law degree from Grinnell College, Iowa, and from the American College in Switzerland. Dr. Stoessinger is the author of ten leading books on international relations, including The Might of Nations: World Politics in Our Time, which was awarded the Bancroft Prize by Columbia University in 1963 and is now in its tenth edition. Dr. Stoessinger also served as chief director book review of Foreign Affairs for five years and as acting director of the Political Affairs Division at the United Nations from 1967 to 1974.
